Alec Doherty makes work that looks at the small, often unnoticed ways people relate to one another. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture and jewellery, his practice begins with close observation and a steady interest in everyday human behaviour.
Growing up in the north of England in a mixed-heritage household as the youngest of seven children, he became aware early on of how personalities shift within a group, how people stand out, blend in, connect and drift apart. Being surrounded by different influences in music, culture and outlook continues to shape the feeling and tone of his work.
He returns to simple gestures and passing moments, translating them into material and form. Whether through drawing, painting, sculpture or precious metals, his work encourages a slower kind of looking, one that makes space for presence, memory and shared experience.
